But hey go big or go home right? We stood in line for 40 minutes to get inside. From afar it looks colorful but up close it is covered with green and shiny marble. The walls of the cathedral are a bit gaudy I thought. In Piazza de Duomo stood the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore. We then wandered towards city-center to see the famous cathedral that defines the skyline of Florence. Presentation is key to the experience of Michaelangelo’s David. The audience is not distracted by other pieces. David is placed in an artistic and isolated corner of the museum with high arched ceilings. He is lit up with soft lights, a fair amount of diffused natural light. I will admit, the Italians were very crafty with the placement of David’s statue. Nothing can measure up to Michelangelo’s masterpiece. To me its final and irrefutable, in the world of sculpture there is David and then there are rest. The look is so intense and so determined it tells you a story. David’s abs, veins sticking out of his arm and hands look completely realistic. Michelangelo paid a lot of attention to detail while bringing David to life. David was carved out of one single piece of marble. With this new founded knowledge I noticed the sling- shot in his hand. I didn’t know that this David is the David from David and Goliath. Towering at 16 feet, the sheer size of this statue is overpowering. I gasped when I saw the jaw-dropping magnificence of David. The museum is studded with masterpieces but the main draw is David and so we flocked towards that section. So we stood in the unreserved line and it took us about 45 minutes to get in. This is one of those museums where reservations are needed ahead of time and we didn’t have any. The first thing I wanted to see in Florence was Michelangelo’s David so we navigated our way to Galleria Academia. Firenzi as they call it, is a laid back and charming city. After the hustle bustle of Rome, Florence was a welcome relief.
